Set the phone before you pose
Hold the phone around shoulder height or slightly above eye level. Keep it parallel to the mirror so vertical lines stay straight. Ultra-wide front lenses warp hands and faces up close — step back or switch to a standard lens setting.
Place yourself slightly off-centre
Standing dead-centre with locked knees makes the frame feel stiff. Shift weight onto one leg, move half a step off-centre, and leave clean space around the body.
For full-length shots, step back until head and shoes both fit. Cropping through the feet is one of the fastest ways to make an outfit photo look unfinished.
Choose what the reflection should say
Clean the background first. Remove laundry, documents, and bright screens. The mirror shows everything behind you, so a simple wall or tidy corner beats a busy room.
- Phone beside the cheek keeps both eyes visible.
- Look into the mirror for a more natural gaze than staring at the screen.
- Use burst mode for laughs — the frame after the peak usually looks better.
Use a prompt sheet when you freeze
If you run out of ideas after two angles, open the selfie and mirror pose book. Each panel has short cues for phone placement, posture, and common mistakes so you can keep moving instead of restarting.
