Find your phone angle

Twelve solo poses you can shoot yourself.

Clean the lens, simplify the background, and change one body angle at a time.

01

Full-Length Mirror

Show the whole outfit

  1. Hold the phone around shoulder height and step far enough back to include the feet.
  2. Shift weight onto one leg and place the free hand lightly in a pocket.

Keep the phone parallel to the mirror to avoid tilted vertical lines.

Common mistakeStanding too close so the phone cuts off your feet.

FixStep back until head and shoes fit, then shift weight onto one leg.

02

Floor Sit

Casual and grounded

  1. Sit on an angle with both knees bent at different heights.
  2. Hold the phone just above eye level and keep the free hand relaxed.

Move away from the mirror enough to keep the phone from covering the face.

Common mistakeHolding the phone directly in front of your face.

FixRaise the phone just above eye level and sit at an angle to the mirror.

03

Low Seated Angle

Bring the viewer closer

  1. Place the phone slightly above the raised knee and angle it down gently.
  2. Lean forward a little while keeping the shoulders open.

Use the widest composition only when the lens does not distort the hands or face.

Common mistakeUsing ultra-wide lens settings that warp hands and face.

FixSwitch to standard focal length and angle the phone down gently from above the knee.

04

Over the Shoulder

Show another angle

  1. Turn the body away from the mirror and look back over the nearest shoulder.
  2. Keep the phone beside the face rather than directly in front of it.

Rotate through the torso instead of twisting only the neck.

Common mistakeTwisting only the neck while holding the phone in front of your face.

FixRotate through the torso and hold the phone beside your face.

05

Look at the Screen

Quiet and candid

  1. Hold the phone with both hands around chest height.
  2. Look down at the screen and soften the shoulders.

Hide notifications and personal information before taking or sharing the photo.

Common mistakeLeaving notifications or personal details visible on the screen.

FixClear alerts before shooting and look down with relaxed shoulders.

06

Hand in Pocket

Easy everyday pose

  1. Place the free thumb in a front pocket and angle the hips slightly away.
  2. Hold the phone just beyond the cheek so both eyes remain visible.

Keep the wrist straight and the elbow relaxed.

Common mistakeBending the wrist and blocking one eye with the phone.

FixKeep the thumb in the pocket and hold the phone just beyond your cheek.

07

Hand in Hair

Add a small action

  1. Touch the hair lightly near the crown with the free hand.
  2. Tilt the phone a little higher and look into the mirror rather than the screen.

Use the fingertips instead of gripping a section of hair.

Common mistakeGripping a fistful of hair for the whole shot.

FixTouch lightly near the crown with fingertips and look at the mirror.

08

One Leg Forward

Lengthen the stance

  1. Place one foot half a step forward and soften both knees.
  2. Keep the phone upright and your body slightly off-centre in the mirror.

Avoid stretching the image digitally; create the line with posture instead.

Common mistakeUsing digital stretch filters instead of changing your stance.

FixStep one foot forward, soften both knees, and hold the phone upright.

09

Back Angle

Change the silhouette

  1. Turn the hips away while bringing the nearest shoulder back.
  2. Look towards the mirror and keep the phone close to the side of the face.

Check that the background remains simple behind the outline.

Common mistakeTurning hips away but leaving a cluttered background in frame.

FixRotate the silhouette and simplify what appears behind you in the mirror.

10

Close-Up Selfie

Soft and personal

  1. Hold the phone slightly above eye level and just beyond arm distance.
  2. Turn the face a few degrees and keep the nearest shoulder low.

Use window light and avoid an ultra-wide lens for close portraits.

Common mistakeShooting too close with an ultra-wide front lens.

FixPull back slightly above eye level and use window light on the nearest shoulder.

11

Outfit Check

Relaxed and useful

  1. Frame from head to upper thigh and place the free hand at the waistband or pocket.
  2. Look down briefly, then take a second frame looking into the mirror.

Keep the room tidy and remove identifiable documents or screens.

Common mistakeLeaving personal items or screens visible in the reflection.

FixTidy the room, frame head to upper thigh, and take one look-down and one mirror-gaze frame.

12

Candid Laugh Selfie

Finish with movement

  1. Start recording or use burst mode before making yourself laugh.
  2. Turn slightly away as the expression relaxes.

The last frame of the laugh often looks more natural than the first.

Common mistakeHolding a frozen smile for the first frame.

FixUse burst mode, laugh naturally, and pick the relaxed frame after the peak.
